Sequences of Ink and Light: An Interpretation Of The Moon Is Distant From The Sea by Emily Dickinson.
This project has been a year-long exploration within my artistic practice, born from a desire to visualise poetry through animation and illustration. What began as a casual experiment—a simple verse and drawing—quickly evolved into a vision of moving images.
As a relatively new and self-taught animator, I discovered that the medium offered me more control and creativity than anything else I've tried, allowing me to explore new depths in my narratives through hand-drawn and painted sequences.
Emily Dickinson's words have inspired my mark-making in this film, the contrasting, yet simple colour palette, and the fluid transitions between my sequences. I used the rhythmic structure of the poem as a valuable tool to guide the tone and emotional impact.
At its core, this film explores a spirited interaction between water and light, which could be interpreted as the masculine and the feminine; a clash and reconciliation of two opposing forces. A longing and a heartbreak.
